I wish GM management would quit making excuses. Toyota is still growing and can't build enough plants in the "high cost country" known as the U.S. Is it the UAW workers' fault that they're building cars that people don't want? Is it their fault they're paid to sit and NOT build these cars? When does Bob Lutz take responsibility and the fall? When does Rick Waggoner take the fall? Nope, let's just cut more workers and plants and continue the "shrink our way to greatness" approach. Ugh.

(As the son of an auto historian, I must pick a nit with you. Olds built cars before Henry Ford, but did not "crank an assembly line." That was Ford's contribution alone).

Beg to differ, Andy. If you double check with your historian parent, have them dig into Olds in 1901 and how he increased production from less than 500 cars that year to a little over 2,500 the next. The answer is that after his Detroit plant burned down in 1901, he built a new plant in Lansing that includd the first known assembly line. It was not a moving conveyor - Ford (really Ford's staff) deserves credit for the first machanized assembly line in the auto industry - but R.E. Olds most definitely preceded Ford by almost ten years, albeit in a crude fashion.
